Sleep—When You Don’t Snooze, You Lose!

thumb_sleep.jpgPopular culture teaches us that "if you snooze you lose," but research shows just the opposite—sleep is important! Learn why getting quality sleep is essential to health. Find out what happens when we get the right kind of sleep and what negative consequences, like loss of productivity, result from not getting enough rest. Review tips and tricks to improve sleep patterns.

Assignment:

Listening Response

Critical listening and reading project (minimum of 800 words in length) Listening (600 word minimum) + reading (200 word minimum)

In Unit I, we explored African music, as well as the African-influenced music of the Caribbean. Now, I’d like you to listen to something new and reflect upon the basic principles of African music that we considered in Unit I.

Choose one CD of African music—preferably one with rather extensive liner notes—from the COD library holdings. (You can procure the CD from another library or a music store, but you must make sure that I have access to that CD in our library.)

Listening (minimum of 600 words): Read the liner notes and listen to the CDs. After you have listened carefully, select four tracks from one CD and write at least 150 words for each track. In your commentary, you should use the material and information given in the liner notes, but only as a point of departure. If you quote from the liner notes, those words must appear in quotation marks, and you may not count those words as part of your minimum written word count.

The goal is to see what insights and illuminating observations you can make about the music. At this point in the semester, we will have examined both African and Caribbean music; you should use your understanding of African music to throw light on the CD tracks. I am requiring you to use CDs owned by our library, and to return them when you hand in your paper, so that I can listen to the tracks myself. In this way, I can examine your commentary, as well as that supplied on the liner notes.

Reading (minimum of 200 words): Read the CD’s liner notes and write a summary, calling my attention to any interesting facts you might have learned.

Don’t forget to identify the title of the CD, the artists (whether for the entire CD or the individual tracks), and the call number. Be sure that you actually give me the call number—one that will probably begin with MF or ML—and not the bar code number.

Here is a list of African music in the COD Library that can be used for this assignment.

My Body, My Frenemy

kitten_lion.JPG
Our relationship with our bodies directly impacts our overall health and wellbeing.

How do YOU view your body?

Is it your friend?
A means to an end?
A “vehicle?”
An enemy or a rival?

This workshop illustrates how we can improve our health by reframing how we relate to our bodies.
Learn how to mindfully turn your body into your ally!

fren·e·my

/ˈfrenəmi/
noun: frenemy; plural noun: frenemies
definition: a person with whom one is friendly despite a fundamental dislike or rivalry.
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/frenemy

What is Health?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

[Preamble to the Constitution of WHO as adopted by the International Health Conference, New York, 19 June - 22 July 1946; signed on 22 July 1946 by the representatives of 61 States (Official Records of WHO, no. 2, p. 100) and entered into force on 7 April 1948. The definition has not been amended since 1948. See this link]

Our Thoughts Shape Reality

thumb_opposites-489521_640.jpg
What is your perception of life and the state of your body (your health)? Do you focus on fighting disease OR on creating health? Which point of view is "better" and why might that be?

What shapes and influences our perceptions of "health?" Answers to that vary but may include personal experience(s), family, friends, society, Institutions, national policies/rules, culture, media...

Our mindset can create either an adversarial or a cooperative/collaborative relationship with our bodies and minds.

Countless studies show that a positive attitude leads to a longer, healthier life.

Internal and External Factors that Support Health & Wellbeing

Internal Traits include being:

  • Enthusiastic
  • Hopeful
  • Engaged
  • Emotionally balanced
  • Resilient

External Factors include:

  • Education
  • Basic Needs Met (food, shelter, security)
  • Economic Stability
  • Strong Social Network (including emotional support)
  • Traditions (familial, cultural, religious)
  • What other internal or external factors do you think contribute to overall health & well being?

    Self-Efficacy

"Self-efficacy is defined as people's beliefs in their capabilities to produce desired effects by their own actions," according to J. E. Maddux.

Given this definition, why do you think self-efficacy is thought to play a large role in physical and psychological health?

Simplified Citations

Simplified Citations

Refer to the Library's Citing Sources information for how to use the standard citation styles (MLA, APA, etc).

To develop a simple bibliography (citation list), record the basic information about the information resource:

Standard Elements of a Citation

For books and articles:

  • Title (of book or article and journal)
  • Author
  • Publication Date or Date of Magazine Issue
  • Publisher or source (journal or magazine title)

Additional information for electronic sources such as Web pages:

  • The URL (Web address)

Tips:

  • Organize your list alphabetically by author's last name. If there is no author listed, lead with the title of the source/web page.
  • Make sure to closely examine the source for all of the citation pieces. Don't skimp!
  • When the information is not available, such as a date on a web page, skip it. Don't make stuff up!
  • There's always a title for a web page. Look for the title at the top of the article page or at the very top of your browser window. If you can't figure it out, contact a librarian or your instructor.
  • Make sure you include the URL for all web pages but leave off the [http://]
  • Remember you are essentially making a map to your sources for the reader.
  • The period comes after the (in-text citation). See examples below

We are committed to promoting these ideals throughout campus and the community serve.

Thank you again from all us at the COD Library!

Oral Citations for ASLI Presentations and Debates

How to Prepare an Oral Citation

As a rule of thumb, these are three basic elements, but this will vary with the type of source:

  • WHO/WHAT: Identify the element of the source (author or title) which provides the greatest authority and/or secondary credibility. Does the author have credentials? What type of publication is it—newspaper, government report, magazine, journal? (In other words, would everybody know that the Kansas City Star is a newspaper? If not, tell them!)
  • WHEN: When was the book, magazine, newspaper or journal published (date)? When was the person interviewed? When was the website last updated and/or when did you access the website?

More specifically----

Articles

If you are quoting from a magazine, newspaper or journal article, give a quick statement of the author (if relevant) as well as the (full) date and title of the source. This applies to both print sources and those found in the Library Databases.

  • “According to Len Zehm, a sports columnist for the Chicago Sun Times, in an article from May 31, 2006…”
  • “Newsweek magazine of December 4, 2005 lists bankruptcy as the…”
  • “In the latest Gallup Poll, cited in last week’s issue of Time magazine…”

You do not need to give the title of the article, although you may if it helps in any way. For example, if you are quoting one or more articles from the same newspaper, this would help differentiate the sources.
You do not need to give the page number nor the name of electronic database that cataloged the periodical/publication.

Books

If you are citing information from a book, provide the title of the book, year of publication and a brief mention of the author's credentials. You don’t have to mention the page, publisher or city of publication:

  • "In his 2005 book, Eating to Be Smart, Charles Larson, a registered dietitian, notes that consuming yogurt…”

Websites

If you are citing a website you need to establish the credibility, currency and objectivity (fact vs. opinion) of the site.
Mention:

  • the title of the website
  • the “author”/organization/sponsor that supports the site
  • the site’s “credentials” You can confirm a site’s “credentials” by looking for links as: “About us” or “Our Mission” or “Who we are”
  • the last date it was updated, if known
  • the date you accessed the site.
Tip:If you cannot find this information on a web site, you may want to consider finding a different source.

  • “One of the most active developers of neurotechnology, Cyberkinetics.com, claims on their website, last updated on March 24, 2006, that…”
  • “From the website maintained by the Wisconsin Council of Dairy Farmers entitled “Dairy Products and Your Diet”, as of January 10, 2007, yogurt…” (or “of an unknown date which I accessed on September 18th of this year”), yogurt proves to be…”

In an oral citation of a website, you do not need to give the URL.

Caution: If a website quotes a book, magazine or newspaper, remember that your source is the website, not the book/magazine/newspaper from which the quote originates.
“From a website supported by Beconvinced.com, a commercial website promoting the religion of Islam, the book Principles of Oceanography is quoted as stating that…”

Interviews

If you are quoting the source of an interview, give the person's name and statement of their credentials, date of interview, as well as the fact that the information was obtained from a personal interview:

  • “In a personal interview on January 15 that I conducted with Nancy Manes, head of cardiac care at Central DuPage Hospital, the most important…”
Caution: Interviews are not the same as conversations or undocumented recollections class lectures; interview sources must be credentialed “experts” in their fields.

Why practice oral citations

Without practice, oral citations can be challenging to incorporate into a speeches.Verbally presenting source references interrupts the flow of thoughts and speakers often are concentrating more on content, rather than worrying about where they sourced the information. Accordingly, incorporate oral source citations into each of your speech rehearsals. Citations become part of the overall timing of the speech, so use a watch or timer when practicing.

Tip: Do not say "quote, unquote" when you cite a direct quotation. Pause briefly instead.
