Everything that the Library owns is listed in the C.O.D. Online Catalog. Below are some hints to help you find what you are looking for.

  1. From the Library home page, click once on Catalog
  2. Type your topic or area of interest into the Keyword box, or search by Title or Author.
  3. Only want DVDs?  Looking for software?  You can specify the Format and limit your search by material type.
  4. Language allows you to select non-English language materials such as Spanish or Russian
  5. Click the Search button to view results

Can I check out books, videos, and CDs and take them home with me?

Yes -- most of general collection items can be checked out for FREE!
To learn more about how long you can borrow materials, visit http://www.codlrc.org/circulation/checkouts

The only books that cannot be checked out have the letters REF on the label on the side or front of the book. REF means the book is a Reference book and can only be used in the Library. Some items in the CCIC (College and Career Information Center) may also be in-Library use only.

You need a C.O.D. Library Card to check things out of the library. You can get a library card at the Circulation Desk located near the entrance to the Library.

Reference Works

Reference works, such as dictionaries, encyclopedias and indexes are a great way to start your research. Reference works provide an overview of the topic as well as background information. Learn about the lives of artists, the connections between artistic concepts, major influences in the art field, the various mediums and artistic traditions.

Click on the links below to access the online book/website or record/description of the print book.

Finding Videos

Click on a link below to find videos on that topic. For more precise results, use the Library's catalog and search by entering specific search terms, such as versailles and palace.

The Library subscribes to many databases that provide access to thousands of popular and credible, scholarly journals. Many databases provide access to full-text articles, while some provide information about the article only (citation). Request (for free!) through Interlibrary Loan copies of articles to which the Library doesn't have full-text access.

Databases are organized collections of information that you can search on a variety of fields, like title and author's name. iTunes is a database and so is Amazon. Even your contacts list in your phone is a type of mini database. The Library has databases of articles from newspapers, magazines and journals. We also have databases of streaming videos, music and e-books. The difference between our databases and iTunes or Amazon is that our stuff is free for you to use. You can browse the library's databases here: http://www.codlrc.org/databases

Modernism in the City: Chicago Artists, 1920-1950
"This collection of artworks, selected over the past twenty years by Bernard Friedman, represents the artistic culture of Chicago from the 1920s to the 1940s. It was a culture graced with the iconoclastic liberty that life in the modern city afforded. Many of the artists in this collection were immigrants—Greeks, Italians, Jews, Poles, Russians, Spaniards, and Swedes. In Chicago they found a unique opportunity for artistic expression in a city revitalized through modernism. Yet they didn’t simply depict this revitalization—they helped shape it."

    Literary Criticism

This guide to literary criticism and analysis is meant to be your starting point for researching critical studies of the world's major literature. It is broken down by form of literature being studied: Short Stories, Novels, Poetry, and Drama. It is very specific in that it is focused on how one might do literary criticism at the COD Library. See the guides on American Literature and British Literature for general information about authors, works, and historical context, as well as, how to find the literature itself online or in the COD library. This guide is meant for the interpretation, analysis, and evaluation of literature.

Literary Theory and Schools of Criticism
From the Purdue OWL online writing lab, this is a great, very brief, look at literary theory and some of the different schools of criticism that have been used or are being used today.

    Tips for Researching Shakespeare

The sheer amount of literature critiquing the bard can become overwhelming to new Shakespeare researchers. Don’t be alarmed when a search for Shakespeare turns up 33,000 hits in the COD catalog. Instead, focus on refining your search using the tips and tricks listed below.

    Shakespeare at the Library

    Search the Catalog

Use the Library Catalog to find books/media on Shakespeare. When searching for criticism, use AND to combine search terms. Start with three main concepts - Author, Text, and Topic. For example, if you are interested in the role of prophecy in Macbeth your Search Statement would be: Shakespeare AND Macbeth AND Prophecy. Play around with different combinations of these three search terms: Shakespeare AND Macbeth, Shakespeare AND Prophecy, Macbeth AND Prophecy. For longer titles like The Merry Wives of Windsor or A Midsummer Night's Dream use quotes around the title. Here are a few sample searches:

If you are looking for a specific text, i.e. a copy of The Taming of the Shrew, use the Catalog to search by title and author.
