Management 2215

The Library has many resources to help you with your leadership project. Search the Library Catalog to find books and videos on leadership as well as biographies of leaders. Below are frequently used sources:

Getting started:

Books are great sources for identifying leaders in any field. Below are some titles to consider looking at before you decide on a person to research.

Encyclopedia of Leadership
Reference HD 57.7 .E53 2004
Award winning, comprehensive 4-volume encyclopedia contains biographies, case studies, and articles about leadership styles, gender issues, theories and concepts, leadership in different disciplines and environments, personality characteristics, power, and situational factors. Don't let its publication date scare you away. The set is still being published.

Icons of Business: An Encyclopedia of Mavericks, Movers, and Shakers
Reference HC 102.5 .A2 D74
Great source to identify leaders in various industries.

Bad Leadership: What it is, How it happens, Why it Matters
General HD57.7 .K47 2004

Why Should Anyone be Led by You?: What it Takes to be an Authentic Leader
General HD57.7 .G663 2006

In Their Time: The Greatest Business Leaders of the Twentieth Century

General HD38.25.U6 M34 2005

What Makes Great Leaders Great : Management Lessons From Icons Who Changed the World by Frank Arnold
General HD57.7 .A765 2012

How to find recent articles on leadership topics:

For this project, you will be including what others have said about your person and their style of leadership. A simple Google search may identify blogs and YouTube content in which others have made comment about that person, but don't rely just on what you find through "Googling". To have a more balanced view of your leader, obtain articles that have been published by a magazine, newspaper or journal. These articles are often more credible because they go through an editorial process. In some cases, they will also share their sources so that you can evaluate the level of research the authors conducted. What databases are best? I suggest seeing what the Wall Street Journal, THE daily financial newspaper, has on your person. I would also try Business Source Complete for sources. This a HUGE database that has articles from all kinds of recent publications. Academic OneFile is another favorite of mine.

Tips for better searches:

Finding articles that will analyze one person is hard to find. Using the person's name as part of the search can usually help you. Another option is to search by industry.

For example:
Bill Gates and leadership
"software industry" and leadership

Other words to try:

leadership
leaders
style
personal narratives
practice
training
communication
management

Citing your sources:

Not only will you include information from the articles either in direct quotes or paraphrased form, you are also expected to create an MLA based citation. Examples of how that looks are here. If citing is new to you, make an appointment with a writing coach in the Learning Commons for more help. It can make a difference in the quality of your work.
