Tree Planting Assignment

Hort 1100 Introduction to Horticulture

Tree Planting Assignment

Planting a tree is not as simple as it seems. While the steps involved are fairly standard, the method for each step can vary or even be contradictory.

Typical Tree Planting Guidelines include:
Hole size, shape, and depth Amending the soil Fertilizing Pruning
Watering Staking Mulching Protecting the trunk

This assignment is designed to have you compare tree-planting guidelines from a variety of sources, organize this information into an annotated bibliography, analyze the guidelines, and write a summary of your conclusions. We will then use this information to generate class discussion, tie it to course content, and generate a "best practice" guideline for tree planting.

From within the library's web site, choose these tools to get started:

Search for books in the Library Catalog (It is also OK to use your local public library for this assignment.)
Look at some web sites selected by the Librarian
Search for other web sites using the search engine of your choice (Ex. Google or Bing)

Analyze your materials:

Use the Library catalog to search the COD Library's collection of books, videos, e-books, and streaming media. Use your COD Library card to check these items out or access them online.

The best way to start searching the Library catalog is to do a keyword search for words that describe your topic. Try to choose specific keywords. You may need to experiment with keywords to find ones that work for your topic. Once you find some items, you can use subject headings to find other items that cover the same topic.Library catalog

Reference Materials

The Library has an excellent collection of encyclopedias and directories for students to use in the Library. Students also have access to these fine online sources of reference materials:

JSTOR Global Plants
JSTOR Global Plants contains the contributed collections of plant type specimens from more than 300 herbaria from around the world. Plant type specimens are critical to scientific study because of their pivotal role as original vouchers of nomenclature and act as a historical record of changes to flora. There are nearly two million high-resolution type specimens currently in the Global Plants database. Faculty and students can also access reference works and primary sources—such as collectors’ correspondence and diaries, paintings, drawings, and photographs.
Landscape Plants of the Chicago Area
Created by Professor Emeritus, Julia Fitzpatrick-Cooper, this collection offers a series of Plant Profiles specifically for students in the HORT 2241 Landscape Plants I and HORT 2242 Landscape Plants II courses. These master plant lists provided the student with images of selected plants from local sources, showing typical attributes and features necessary for identifying, naming and using plants in the Chicago area. The intention of this collection is to provide a valid study tool with pertinent images and information..
Credo Reference
Credo Reference is a large collection of encylopedias and other reference materials that students can use for general research.

Using I-Share

The library is a part of a consortium of academic libraries known as I-Share. As COD students, you can request items from other libraries online by creating an I-Share account. For more information, visit our I-Share Information Web Page.

Horticulture Videos in the Library

Videos in the Library are available to both students and faculty. Students can check out most of the Library videos but sometimes they have to be used in the Library. If you would like to take a reserved video home, please contact the Horticulture Librarian to get permission for a brief loan.

Faculty, if you'd like to use a video in your class, please call the Circulation Department at 630-942-2106 to have the item delivered to the TEC building or held for pickup at the Library. You can book your videos well in advance of your classes and are strongly encouraged to do so.

How to Search for Videos in the Catalog

When you are in the Library catalog, do a search. (Ex. Plant Propagation) You can limit the search to a specific video format by clicking on the limiters under "Narrow your Search:" VHS, DVD, or eVideo.
