Go to the Library's Citing Sources page to get help creating your bibliography. Try using NoodleBib to create an MLA style bibliography. You'll need your COD Library card to use NoodleBib from home.

Many Fashion students use images from book materials. Here's how to cite an image in a book: First, find the image acknowledgements or credits in the Acknowledgements section of the book (usually at the front or back of the book or at the end of a chapter). Then use this template below to create your MLA citation.

Artist's name. Name of Art Work. Year of Art Work, if known. Where the item "lives" today. Title of Book. Edition statement, if any. By Author's name/s. Place of Publication: Publisher Name. Page number. Medium. (Print for books. Electronic for E-books).

Example:

Goya, Francisco. The Family of Charles IV. 1800. Museo del Prado, Madrid. Gardener's Art Through the Ages. 10th ed. By Richard G. Tansey and Fred S. Kleiner. Fort Worth: Harcourt Brace. 939. Print.

TIP: If the artist is unknown or not stated (like from a really old tapestry or mosaic), just skip the artist name and lead off with the title of the piece.
Here's an explanation of this citation from the Purdue OWL website: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/09/

Here's an example citation for an electronic image in a library database or from a website:

Artist's name. Name of Art Work. Year of Art Work, if known. Where the item "lives" today or who owns the image. Title of Website. Medium. Date of access.

Example:

Muir, Jean. Fashion Photograph of a Silk Jersey All-in-One Jumpsuit 1969. Ernestine Carter Archive, Fashion Museum Bath and North East Somerset Council. Berg Fashion Library. Web. 5 February 2016.

Here's an explanation of this citation from the Purdue OWL website: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/08/

Requesting Materials

Finding and Ordering Materials in other Libraries

There are many ways to locate and borrow materials that are owned by other libraries. You can physically go to most area libraries and use the materials there, or go to a partner academic library and use your library card to check out materials or make copies of articles.

To find books and journals in other Libraries, use the WorldCat database to find materials in libraries near you. (Make a WorldCat account and add C.O.D. Library as a "favorite." WorldCat will tell you if we have the books you are looking for.)

Here's some frequently asked questions about requesting materials:

I found a book that I really want to see but the COD doesn't own it. How do I get it?

Order the book through Interlibrary Loan. The C.O.D. Library will order the book for you from the library that can deliver it to us the quickest. Give us as much information about the book as you can and your Library Card number. The Library will call you when the book has been delivered and ready for you to pick up.

I found an article that the C.O.D. Library does not own. How do I get a copy of it?

First, make sure that we don't have the journal by searching for it using the Journal Locator.

If we don't have it, order the article through Interlibrary Loan. You'll need to have the journal title, article title, author and date of publication of the article. Have your library card handy.

How many items can I order through Interlibrary Loan?

As a student, you can order as many Interlibrary Loans as you need to complete your research.

How long does Interlibrary Loan take?

Interlibrary loan of books usually takes 10-14 days. In many cases, articles will be emailed to you so you could have it in as little as 3-5 days.

REFERENCE BOOKS

Why Reference Sources?

Is your research topic too big to cover in a short paper?  Is your topic so specific that sources will be hard to find?

Before you even begin your research, start the process with reference sources-- in the Library's Reference Section or online in our databases.  Reference books, like subject encyclopedias, can give you a head start and make your research easier in the long run.  Use reference sources to:

  • find a topic
  • narrow your topic
  • find keywords
  • get background information on your topic

There are several tools available for searching the Internet. Using a variety of tools is always a good rule of thumb when looking for information on the web. Google is a great resource but also try some of the other tools on the Library's Web Search Tools pages.

It is also very important to evaluate the information that you find on the web before you use it.

Its important to evaluate the information from websites. When reviewing information, ask the following questions:

  • How old is this material? Is there a date of publication? Is the material out-of-date?
  • Who wrote this information? Is the company or person who sponsors the website reputable?
  • Is the website trying to sell you something?
  • Is the information biased? Does it seem like the author is just giving his/her opinion? Is the author making a one-sided argument? (not offering an alternate point-of-view?)
  • Is the information backed up with facts that you can confirm using other sources?
  • Be sure to check out the library's Evaluating Web Sources Guide

Here's a small selection of quality websites for facility management:
ASHRAE Standards & Guidelines
ASHRAE sets the industry standards for a variety of facility management concerns.Check out the student section.
International Facility Management Association
